The BTA’s mission

The BTA plays a vital role in advancing the safe supply of blood for transfusion. Its members are committed to producing high-quality products that meet the highest safety and efficacy standards. By joining the BTA, blood bag set manufacturers are contributing to the overall advancement of the industry.

By working together with our members and stakeholders, the BTA strives to promote the best practices in blood transfusion, advocate for policies that ensure patient safety, and support innovation in the field. We are committed to advancing the field of blood transfusion and contributing to the well-being of patients worldwide.

Our mission at the BTA is to promote the correct use and safe supply of blood for transfusion. Through our direct membership and stakeholder network, we aim to make the voice of the blood sector heard collaboratively. We support policies that enable blood bag manufacturers to meet public health needs in the field of blood transfusion.

To achieve our mission, the BTA works to engage policymakers, regulators, blood establishments, and other stakeholders in discussions about improving public health to ensure patients have timely access to safe blood and blood components. As the scientific and regulatory landscape continues to evolve, the BTA actively participates in discussions to shape policies and regulations that uphold the highest standards of safety and efficacy in blood transfusion.

The BTA’s work

Our main activities at the BTA include advocating for legislative and non-legislative policies at the European, and international levels. We collaborate with stakeholders to develop projects that support our objectives and coordinate initiatives promoted by specialized organizations that aim to promote safe blood use and supply.

  • Advocacy and Representation

The BTA actively engages with policymakers, regulators, blood establishments, and other stakeholders to promote policies that ensure patients have timely access to safe blood and blood components for transfusion. We participate in discussions to shape policies and regulations that uphold the highest standards of safety and efficacy in blood transfusion.

Our recent work has focused on legislative files, such as the Substances of Human Origin (SoHO) Regulation, the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) Regulation and the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), which have significant implications for blood transfusion practices in Europe. The BTA advocates for policies that ensure the safety, quality, and accessibility of blood products while promoting innovation and advancements in the field.

  • Collaboration and Coordination

The BTA develops collaborative projects and coordinates initiatives promoted by stakeholders and specialized organizations to promote safe blood use and supply. Our members have participated in high-level conferences, such as their intervention in August at America’s Blood Centres (ABC) 2022 MD Workshop & Summer Summit.

We work towards aligning efforts and initiatives in the blood transfusion field to ensure a cohesive approach towards patient safety. We also provide networking opportunities for our members through events and conferences that bring together blood bag set manufacturers, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.

In December 2022 the BTA organized its first event at the European Parliament which gathered high-profile members from the Commission, EP, Council and the industry, who all welcomed the outcomes of the meeting.
